MONTAÑITA

SURF CARE

Over the last decade, the surf industry in Montañita has experienced rapid growth, fueled by tourism demand and international recognition of its waves. The hotel and restaurant sectors were the first to benefit, creating a solid infrastructure to welcome surfers and visitors from all over the world.

Surf schools now play a central role, organized through the Montañita Surf School Association, which ensures representation and quality in teaching. In parallel, there are artisans and surfboard makers, both of fiberglass and traditional balsa wood, keeping alive a local practice with international reach.

The supply has also expanded to include the production of textiles and surfwear, the emergence of specialized shops, and the development of innovative small businesses, both local and foreign residents. Among the most sought-after products are waxes, water-resistant sunscreens, rental surfboards, and repair services, which support a diverse and integrated industry.

Thanks to this ecosystem, Montañita now offers complete logistics for surfing at all levels, from beginners to professional athletes, competing with international brands and destinations.

FEATURED INITIATIVES

  • Banco de Tábuas Montañita – A social project of the Ecuadorian Ministry of Tourism that promotes the donation of used surfboards (in good condition) by surfers to children and young people with limited resources, previously identified but with high potential for surfing.

  • Community Surf Schools – A sustainable management model supported by the Ministry of Tourism, which offers job opportunities to people in the region, promotes international certifications for instructors, fosters professional ethics and environmental responsibility, while contributing to the care of the beaches.

  • Headquarters of the Montañita Surf School Association (EMSA) – Created from investments by the Ministry of Tourism in local infrastructure, this headquarters brings together 15 legally constituted surf schools, offering better working conditions for teachers and students, including showers and changing rooms next to the beach.

  • Protecting the waves and the environment – The surf schools in Montañita actively participate in beach clean-up campaigns, environmental awareness activities, and social projects that use surfing as a tool for integration.
