ESCOLAS PÚBLICAS DE SURF

Waves of Tradition and Inclusion

Santos lives and breathes surfing, and the beating heart of this passion is evident in its two iconic institutions: the Radical Surf Public School, at Post 2, and the Adapted Surf Public School, at Post 3.

These schools are spaces for sports learning, rehabilitation and leisure, but above all, they are centers for social transformation, resilience and inclusion.

Free access and successful partnership

Both schools offer free classes, an accessibility model made possible by a successful public-private partnership.

Blue Med Saúde's support guarantees free access and allows more and more people to have their lives transformed through sport.

Radical Public Surf School – Tradition and pioneering spirit

Over its 34 years of operation, the school has impacted the lives of nearly 50,000 students.

At Ohana, participants find a space to improve their physical and mental health, sowing hope and strengthening their connection to the sea.

The school serves a diverse community of over 500 students weekly in Posto 2, Santos, spanning all ages — from 7 to over 80 years old.

Every year, the Prancha Oca Festival celebrates intergenerational encounters by the sea.

One reflection of the longevity and well-being policy is the 50+ program, which has the participation of more than 200 students over the age of 50.

Meeting up on the beach and the energy of surfing help combat loneliness, anxiety, and depression.

The Radical Public Surf School proves that it's never too late to find a new purpose.

Public School of Adapted Surfing – Resilience and Inclusion

Created in 2020, the Public School of Adapted Surfing is a true beacon of inclusion and empowerment.

The facility offers adapted surfing programs for students with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, tetraplegia, rare diseases, and other conditions.

The school also supports surfers who have suffered accidents or strokes, offering them the opportunity to return to the sea.

Adapted surfing is therapy, freedom, and self-esteem, where inclusion is the wave that everyone rides together.

Legacy and recognition

The coordination work of Cisco Araña, the mastermind behind and head of the schools since their inauguration in 1992, is widely respected and recognized.

In 2025, Cisco Araña was named a Global Ambassador for WSCN and won 2nd place in the Aloha Awards, organized by ISTO – International Surfing Therapy Organization, which recognizes projects related to the benefits of the ocean and its preservation.

The activities and credibility of the Public Surf Schools in Santos are made possible thanks to the support of the Santos City Hall, the Department of Sports, Blue Med Saúde, and teams that are aligned and working in full synergy.

Both schools emphasize the importance of the beach as a democratic space for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

Recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the city in 2025 underscores the relevance of the work carried out and its impact on the community, reaffirming Santos as a Surf City and an active member of the WSCN – World Surf Cities Network.
