HUANCHACO

SURF CARE

Huanchaco 's commitment to sustainability is formalized and spearheaded by its status as the 5th World Surfing Reserve (WSR), a designation awarded by the Save The Waves Coalition . This title confers a clear mandate for the protection and management of the coastal environment.

KEY AREAS OF OPERATION:

  • Ecosystem Protection: The main focus of conservation is on the restoration and maintenance of totora reed swamps. These swamps are vital not only for coastal biodiversity, but also for the subsistence of the native reed, the raw material for "caballitos de totora" (reed boats).

  • Community and Scientific Management: Conservation is implemented through a Local Management Council (LSC) that works in partnership with modern science and the community's traditional ecological knowledge to ensure the health of the wave and coastal ecosystem.

  • Climate Resilience: Totora reed bog restoration projects are used as an environmental innovation tool to generate coastal resilience and protect the area against the impacts of climate change, ensuring the longevity of the wave-riding tradition.
