EVENTS

Huanchaco is recognized worldwide for its consistent waves and rich maritime history, being home to the ancient culture of the Totora Reed Horse ( Caballito de Totora ). This legacy makes the city a hub for events that combines tradition and elite competition.

Strategic Statute

In October 2013, Huanchaco was designated the fifth World Surfing Reserve (WSR) in the world and the first in all of Latin America by the Save The Waves Coalition. This status reinforces the community's commitment to coastal conservation and the sustainable management of surfing.

INTERNATIONAL LONGBOARD COMPETITIONS

The beach, known for its consistent and clean left-hand waves, is ideal for longboarding, solidifying its role as the epicenter of South American longboarding.

  • Huanchaco is a historic location and regular host of editions of the International Surfing Association (ISA) Longboard World Championship.

  • Huanchaco Pro Longboard (WSL South America): The city annually hosts a crucial stage of the World Surf League (WSL) , where South American titles in the sport are decided.

Continental and National Circuits (Wings and Fenta)

The World Surfing Reserve is a frequent stop for the main continental circuits, attracting the new generation of talent (seedlings):

    

  • ALAS Global Tour (Latin American Surfing Association): The city hosts Shortboard (Under 14, Under 18 and Open), Longboard and SUP Surf competitions as part of the ALAS continental circuit.

  • Peruvian Surfing Circuit (FENTA): Huanchaco hosts several stages of the Peruvian National Circuit.

Cultural Events and Social Development

Surf events in Huanchaco are complemented by activities that celebrate the culture and social development:

      

  • Caballitos de Totora Competitions: The championships include activities that celebrate the tradition of these ancestral boats.

  • Social Action Programs: Local organizations use surfing as a tool for the mental and physical development of children from disadvantaged communities.
