SAN BARTOLO
CITY
The presence of pioneering, sporadic visitors to the beaches of San Bartolo occurred between the years 1955-1960. Mino Swayne, Miguel Plaza and Pitti Block were captivated by the magnitude of the waves, the proximity to the capital and the tranquility of a fishing village.
This community of surf enthusiasts began to grow with the first generation of permanent residents in the district, around the years 1960-1965: Luis Labarthe, Manuel Vidal, and Pedro Vega. Subsequently, a second generation took their place between 1965 and 1970: César E. Vidal (Chinito), Alejandro (Wiracocha), Roberto Weiss, and Eduardo Dietschi. Later, the third generation arrived, in the years 1970-1975: Raúl Calle (Patero), Gustavo Labarthe, and Ricardo Peschiera.
The first championship held in San Bartolo was in Peñascal (Onda Grande), in 1972, with Oscar Malpartida as the winner and Sergio Barreda in second place. César E. Vidal and the brothers Manuel and Paco Castillo also reached the final.
The most prominent local surfers at the national and international level are Miguel Plaza, Raúl Calle, Maki Block, and Sebastián Alarcón. Raúl won championships at his beach, San Bartolo , in 1975, as well as an Inter-School championship in 1976 and 1977, and was National Vice-Champion in 1977 behind Herbert Fiddler. Sebastián Alarcón was national champion in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007, and Latin American champion (ALAS) in 2010, and is now the coach of the prestigious Club Regatas Lima.
