HUANCHACO
INNOVATION
Innovation in Huanchaco is intrinsically linked to its status as a World Surfing Reserve (WSR) and its commitment to integrated coastal management. Innovation initiatives focus not only on the tourism sector, but above all on the application of science to environmental and cultural conservation.
FEATURED PROJECTS:
Restoration of Water Ecosystems : The city is focused on projects to restore totora reed swamps (the native reed), which are vital for the livelihood of the "caballito de totora" (a type of reed carpenter) and essential for coastal biodiversity. This initiative uses traditional ecological knowledge in conjunction with modern science to build climate resilience and protect the ecosystem that sustains the local culture.
Monitoring and Management : The community and partners work together to implement monitoring and surveillance tools to ensure the health and integrity of their World Surfing Reserve. This collaborative, data-driven management allows for informed decisions to protect wave quality and the marine environment.
Promoting Ecotourism : Innovation is used to develop ecotourism business models that create value for the local community (fishermen, artisans, guides), ensuring that economic growth is sustainable and values ancestral cultural heritage, positioning Huanchaco as a responsible surfing destination.
