ERICEIRA
SURF CARE
In Ericeira , surfing is not just a sport or tourism: it is also a way of caring for the sea, the people, and the community. The status of World Surfing Reserve has brought increased responsibilities, which are reflected in environmental preservation actions, social inclusion programs, and educational initiatives that connect the population to the ocean.
This commitment translates into projects that promote coastal sustainability, the integration of diverse audiences through surfing sports, and the fostering of a culture of respect for the sea.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
The Mafra City Council, in conjunction with the Ericeira Surf Club, promotes initiatives related to coastal protection and environmental awareness. These include regular beach clean-up actions and educational projects associated with dates such as Earth Day or World Oceans Day, involving the local community, schools, and volunteers.
ESC also participated in the European project BEST WATERS (Erasmus+), which aimed to develop sustainability tools in aquatic sports, aligned with the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
SOCIAL INCLUSION
Ericeira Surf Club leads a pioneering set of inclusion projects through surfing in Portugal, with the support of the Mafra City Council.
Among the most relevant are:
Surfing4Inclusion – sporting and social innovation for people with visual, motor and cognitive disabilities, with a strong component focused on employability and training.
Surf4All – promoting equal opportunities and social integration through surfing.
SurfEDaut – adapted surfing for children and young people with autism spectrum disorders.
Surfing4Mobility – inclusion of practitioners with reduced mobility.
Surfing4Family – a program integrated into SEI+ (Mafra City Council), which promotes adapted surfing for seniors, reinforcing health, autonomy and well-being.
