The 1st European adapted Surfing Championship will take place in Viana do Castelo. This championship could be decisive for the sport becoming Paralympic. Among the confirmed nations are France, Germany, Portugal, Italy and Spain, and the elements of the last three countries will be staying in the Surfing Viana High Performance Surf Center (HPC).
We are counting down for the 1st European Adapted Surfing Championship, which will take place from 20 to 26 May, at Cabedelo beach, in Viana do Castelo, it will count with senior classifiers from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and of the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA).
It is therefore the first official European event for adapted surf teams with the support of the Portuguese Paralympic Committee (CPP), IPC, IBSA and the International Surfing Association (ISA).
Among the confirmed nations are France, Germany, Portugal, Italy and Spain, and the elements of the last three countries will be staying in the Surfing Viana High Performance Surf Center (HPC).
From the event program, the competition will be taking place between 21st to the 25th of May, at Cabedelo beach. There will also be held on the 18th of May at the Surf CAR a seminar on classification, guided by IPC classifiers, IBSA and with ISA assistance.
The main objective of this seminar is to enhance, especially to the participants, the path that should be followed both for the adapted surfers and the classifiers. It’s aimed mainly at physicians, occupational therapists and physiotherapists, A requirement of participation, is to undertake a course of initiation to sport at the IPC Online Academy.
According to José Manuel Lourenço, President of the CPP, "the organization of this championship, with good qualification criteria and quality athletes, can be a very positive and decisive contribution for the sport to become Paralympic." José Manuel Lourenço, also added that, "the more participants there are, the greater the possibility of achieving this goal."
Therefore, he wishes the organization and the athletes "the best of luck", he believes that "commitment, is there", "good waves and lots of participation".
Surfing HPC will be the main support infrastructure for the "EuroSurf Adaptive 2019". In addition to providing accommodation, it will host the seminar and all other actions supporting the championship, such as medical care and evaluation.
Cabedelo beach, HPC Surf and Viana do Castelo, for their recent history, have shown to have excellent conditions to welcome and enhance the evolution of adapted surfing.
This championship is organized by Surf Club de Viana, in partnership with the European Surfing Federation, the Portuguese Surfing Federation, the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth, the Paralympic Committee of Portugal and the City Council of Viana do Castelo.
