In Lacanau, we undeniably have the Legacy of Surfing and Sliding. Located in the heart of a hundred kilometers of sandy beach offering several hundred surf spots in the middle of nature, Lacanau has always been the driving force behind surfing in Gironde and one of the most active in France and Europe.

The Lacanau Surf Club has been a "surf culture agitator" since the 1950s. Officially established in 1967, it quickly brought together a community of surfers and since 1979 has organized championships of international renown.

In addition, in the early 1990s, Lacanau organized one of the first competitions of Waveski and is internationally recognized for its nautical stadium in Pitrotto host world championship events.

Today, Lacanau has undeniable experience in the organization of major competitions: Lacanau Pro, Lacanau Gliss Festival, Euro Sup. Lacanau also has also the label "Surf City”.

Proof of this is historic dynamism: the International Tandem Surfing Federation (ITSA - International Tandem Surfing Association) recognized by the ISA was created in 2005 in Lacanau and is domiciled in Lacanau (by Rico Leroy and Jérémy Boisson).

Lacanau claims to be a land of champions and committed sportsmen. Among the competitors and personalities of the Lacanau Surf club, we can mention: Gisèle Bidon, Nadège Guillet, Jacques Hèle (honorary president of ISA), Thierry Fernandez (winner of the Lacanau Pro 82, champion of Europe and France ), Yann Martin (vice-champion of Europe, 3x champion of France surfing), Bérangère Planté (champion of France), Damien Noel (junior champion of surfing France), Justine Dupont (member of the World Tour of Surfing, champion of Europe, France, surf and longboard), Pascal Basurko (European junior bodyboard champion), Cédric Grèze (French bodyboard champion), Christophe Lalande (European junior surf champion), Adrien Valéro, Geoffroy Henno, Nathan Hèle, Yannick Gauthier (finalists France and Europe), Eric Leroy and Sarah Burel (multiple world champions, Europe and France tandem surf).

Since 2014 Laurent Peyrondet, mayor of Lacanau, want to develop the city through surfing and skiing.

A real work has been started with national and international surfing players to build a lasting legacy and meet their expectations for the development of the discipline (WSL).

Lacanau is a candidate to host the surfing events at the Olympics 2024 in Paris. Thus the city has set up a partnership with Bordeaux Métropole to mutualise our resources (accommodation, transport, media hub etc...). This application is an application for territory that already brings together all the economic and institutional players in the Gironde and beyond.

Lacanau is a land of innovation: Waveski, French Stand Up Paddle Championship (Bordeaux and Lacanau), tandem surf (with 2 world champions Rico Leroy and Sara Burel).

Lacanau has included in its local urban plan (“PLU"), voted in 2017, an area dedicated to innovation, skiing and digital. This area is located at the entrance of the city and intended to eventually host a project like the artificial wave.

In addition, in order to offer athletes a living environment allowing them to practice their sport safely, a health pole project on the Moutchic site (around Lake Lacanau) is underway. This pole will bring together a pool of health professionals to support but also the rehabilitation of all people.

Lacanau brings together a beautiful community of shapers, working in the most classic and most innovative way by using the materials available in the nearby environment.

Lacanau also welcomed the production plant of Aleeda suits in the first years of the European surf industry.

Lacanau is a modern and well maintained seaside resort, where you can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities for sport and relaxation. Among the many seaside resorts along the Côte d'Argent, Lacanau is also one of the most popular and most visited. Behind the beach and the dunes, Lacanau is a tourist town with a main pedestrian street, cafes, bars, shops, a cultural complex, a cinema, and a very pleasant atmosphere in any season.

Tourism represents more than 4,000 jobs on the Aquitaine coast, and 1.7 billion turnovers.

Today, the region brings together more than 1.000 sports educators around surfing and Lacanau includes 19 surf schools and half is labeled French surf school.

In order to best accommodate the tourists, a complete and diversified offer of accommodation is proposed: a total of commercial beds is estimated at 19.000 beds, dominated by the outdoor hotel industry.

The municipality plans to create a future conference center in Lacanau Océan. This new equipment project will accommodate business and corporate tourism in Lacanau and facilitate exchanges with the Bordeaux.

Initiated by Lacanau, an initiative bringing together all institutional players was launched to create a truly coherent approach to managing surfing practices. The goal is to enable sustainable development of surfing. The main orientations are:

-Maintain attractiveness and promote economic development -Provide better management to maximize benefits and minimize environmental impacts -Innovate to reconcile the regulatory requirements and the needs of structures -Regulate and regulate to allow a sustainable development of the activity.

The economy generated by surfing is very real in Lacanau which still hears to increase responsibly its attractiveness.

The city is positioning itself in the markets for nature sports tourism and business tourism in order to reduce its dependence on seasonality.

On the one hand, its land-use plan includes the development of business parks focused on surfing and skiing. In particular, the creation of an ecosystem integrating an artificial wave, a training center, research and performance for surfing, will promote the radiation city and the establishment of companies and start-ups at the technology, innovation and digital technology.

On the other hand, it intends to reinforce its event offering by relying first and foremost on surfing and skiing, but also well-being and health. It is in this the framework of his candidacy for the organization of the surfing Olympic Games of Paris 2024.

Other reflections are underway to attract or create new world-renowned events, building on the specificities and added values of the territory.

Today, thanks to competitions such as Lacanau Pro, Lacanau has brought financial and organizational partners such as the Girondins de Bordeaux, Sooruz and Caraibos. It continues its approach with its historical and new partners to involve them always more in the events of glide Canaulais (as for example on the brand new skate park).

There are also more than 10 surf shops in Lacanau, shapers and repairers (3 structures), equipment rentals at the ocean and on the lake, surf camps (more than 3 accommodation and support structures), bars restaurants and shops station that cultivate the surf identity of the City.

Lacanau is a land of challenges and wants to allow everyone to find his way, regardless of the level and practice of each.

Lacanau is a commune with a strong and dense associative fabric: More than a hundred associations whose half is linked to the world of skiing. Moreover, the Lacanau surf Club now has over 1.600 members and 20 employees.

Lacanau has also launched a real work of social integration and education through surfing and skiing. For example, the LSC has developed the Garden of Waves® in the 90 ', a surf course for 5-8 years, adapted in terms of supervision and playful above all, now copied throughout France, but never equal.

In 2018 took place the surf championship UNSS France in Lacanau, bringing together all French surfers collegians and thus recognizing Lacanau's unparalleled experience in learning surfing. Many events are created in partnership with the Lacanau Surf Club, such as 100% girls, small scoundrels, always with the aim of allowing everyone to practice his glide.

The Lacanau Surf Club was the first club labeled to welcome and develop the practice of surfing with public handicap- (see surf).

In 2005, the first steps in environmental awareness are made, and this is the birth of the "Surfin Nature" program. Finally, Lacanau has embarked on an eco-responsible event by signing the Eco event charter carried by association of” the flake to the wave”, and supported by the Ademe. This development of Lacanau by surfing and sliding also allows to consider new conditions of movement within the resort, with shared spaces on the seafront.

In addition, Lacanau is a development community by all the means it uses to maintain the conditions for access to skiing: The maintenance of the house of the slide, the creation and maintenance of skate parks, the free provision of showers on the waterfront at each beach access (more than 6 accesses equipped on Lacanau), the maintenance and development of the waterfront parking, The Ocean View at the level of the central beach, the large parking in the forest to the north and south of the station, the establishment and maintenance of descents to access the beaches (stairs, walkways, ganivelles) sanitary (north beach, south and central beach), Opening of the fire stations from May to October (6 posts on Lacanau) with the emergency jet ski and drop zones for the rescue helicopter.
